Pokémon Legends: Z-A Is Here — What New Players Should Know Before Starting

Game Freak's Lumiose City adventure shakes up the series' battle system. If you are jumping in fresh, these are the basics worth knowing first.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Pokémon Legends: Z-A takes the series somewhere it has never quite been before: one enormous city. The whole adventure unfolds inside Lumiose City, which is being rebuilt under an urban redevelopment plan that wants people and Pokémon to share the same streets — and, this being Pokémon, a battle league that runs through the night.

Real-time battles change everything

The biggest shift from mainline games is combat. Battles happen in real time: you move your trainer, position your Pokémon, and fire off moves on cooldowns rather than taking turns from a menu. Dodging matters. Placement matters. It feels closer to an action game than the turn-based battles the series is famous for, and it takes a few fights to click — give it time.

The Z-A Royale

By day you explore, catch and complete research. By night, battle zones open across the city and the Z-A Royale begins: a promotion league where you climb from rank Z to rank A by challenging other trainers. It is the spine of the game, and ranking up unlocks tougher zones, better rewards and rarer encounters.

Mega Evolution returns

Yes, it's back. Mega Evolution returns as a headline mechanic, with familiar Megas joined by new ones discovered around the city. Building your team around who can Mega Evolve — and when to trigger it mid-fight — becomes a core part of tougher battles.

Three quick starter tips

  • Catch wide, not just strong. Research tasks reward variety, and some evolutions are far easier to find wild than to raise.
  • Spend your nights in battle zones. Rank progress is time-limited by the day cycle, so use nights deliberately.
  • Keep a Fairy or Steel type handy. The city's encounter mix will punish one-dimensional teams.

Whether you are a series veteran or this is your first Pokémon game, Z-A is a genuine experiment — and mostly a successful one. Our full review is in the works.
